Since the 1980s, Korea has been pursuing liberalization and
internationalization of its financial markets and industry to
encourage competition and stimulate market forces in order to
improve the efficiency and competitiveness of its financial
services industry. As the world financial markets and industries
experience a rapid transformation of financial integration and
globalization, Korea must also react and take new directives to
open its financial sector.
In this pretext, the Fredrich Ebert Stiftung and Korea
Development Institute held a joint conference on the monetary
and financial policy issues faced by Korea and EC countries on
May 27-28, 1992. The conference drew the participation of a
umber of knowledgeable researchers, businessmen, and professors
from Korea as well as EC countries.
