1월호는 2022/23년 북한 경제의 상황을 2016년 이후의 중장기 경제 추세를 바탕으로 분석하고 관련 요인을 탐색한다. 더불어 2022년에 농업을 제외한 산업 및 실물 부문이 2021년에 비해 소폭이지만 성장했을 가능성을 살핀다. 다만 UN 대북 경제제재가 완전히 해제되더라도 수출입 모두 2017년 이전으로 회귀하는 것은 불가능하며, 무역 확대를 통한 경제회복 역시 한계가 있을 수 있다고 지적한다. 2023년 북한의 대외교역은 화물열차 운행 지속 등을 통해 코로나19 시기(2020~22년)에 비해 상황이 개선될 가능성이 높으나 대내외적 환경 변화로 어느 때보다도 불확실성이 높은 상황이다. 아마도 코로나19 사태 이후 최악의 상황을 면한 수준에서 일부 회복하거나 그 상태를 유지하는 것에서 머물 것으로 판단한다. 마지막 보고서는 북한의 만성 식량 부족 상황을 분석하고 최근 북한이 강조한 새로운 농정전략과 시책의 추진 방향을 설명한다.

The January issue of the publication provides an analysis of the state of the North Korean economy in 2022/2023, based on a review of mid- to long-term economic trends since 2016. The authors carefully examine the factors contributing to these trends and suggest a possibility of a slight recovery in the industrial and real sectors in 2022, in comparison to the previous year. However, they note that even if the United Nations economic sanctions against North Korea were to be lifted, it would present a significant challenge for the economy to regain its pre-2017 level, and any improvement through trade expansion may prove to be short-lived. In 2023, North Korea's external trade is expected to improve, thanks to the continued operation of freight trains, however uncertainties remain high due to the evolving internal and external environment. The economy is predicted to experience only a partial recovery, or to remain stagnant, compared to the lowest point during the COVID-19 pandemic. The final thesis addresses the persistent food shortage issue in North Korea and examines the direction of new agricultural strategies and policies recently emphasized by the regime.
