Symposium on the Policy Challenges for Implementing a Dynamic Economy
- On January 12th, a symposium was held at KDI with the theme of ‘Policy Challenges for Implementing a Dynamic Economy.’
The symposium brought together key researchers from institutions such as Korea Development Institute (KDI), Science and Technology Policy Institute, Korea Labor Institute, Korea Institute for Health and Social Affairs , Korea Research Institute for Vocational Education & Training , Korea Institute of Public Finance and Economic Research Institute of the Bank of Korea.
- The symposium commencing with remarks from Deputy Prime Minister Choi Sang-mok and KDI President Cho Dongchul, featured an opening presentation followed by three sessions.
As the opening speaker, Dr. Youngsun Koh, the Vice President of KDI, assessed the Korean economy’s dynamism in terms of industry, business, individuals and regions. Furthermore, Koh pointed out the vulnerabilities in the Korean economy such as insufficient preparedness for digital and green transitions, limited upward mobility from small to large businesses, labor market inequalities stemming from educational disparities, and regional disparities exacerbated by industrial structural changes.
He emphasized the need for enhancing economic dynamism by promoting high-value-added domestic industries through digital and green transitions, improving productivity through business scale-up, reforming education and labor markets to boost social mobility, and strengthening local-led regional development with greater autonomy and responsibility.
Afterwards, the participants engaged in in-depth discussions on three key policy directions and challenges for a dynamic economy: strengthening innovation ecosystems, enhancing social mobility and ensuring fair opportunities.
